TENDECIES OF GOTHIC IN FLORENCE: ANDREA BONAIUTI
€155,00
This volume discusses the oeuvre of Andrea Bonaiuti, one of the leading characters of Florentine painting in the second half of the 14th century. It discusses the fresco style in Pisa, and Andrea’s panel paintings and stained-glass work, which have remained hitherto relatively little known. The discussion of Bonaiuti’s oeuvre is divided into two parts. In the first of these, the works from the artist’s early maturity are dealt with, for example, his production before the completion of the frescoes in the Spanish Chapel of Santa Maria Novella (1367). The second part describes the works of the late period, ending with the artist’s death in 1379. The introductory essay reconstructs Andrea’s artistic development, and analyzes the effects of his painting on the artists of his circle, as well as the influence on him of contemporary Sienese painting. The increasing number of works attributed to the master and his workshop during previous decades are also evaluated critically, offering a contribution to the knowledge of Florentine painting in the Gothic period.
